David Robert Interview: You and Me (Faversham Fringe)

This year at the Faversham Fringe, Kent-based comedian and improviser David Robert is presenting a live game show all about relationships ‘You and Me’. Intrigued by the concept, especially having watched Blind Date and Take Me Out growing up, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to ask the performer some questions about the show. ‘You and Me’ celebrates all kinds of relationships and combines comedy with audience interaction.

How did you get into comedy?

Well I could argue that I’ve been into it all my life. I remember reading the Puffin Books of Jokes when I was a kid and then treating friends to some great Knock Knock jokes. As an actor, comedy has always been on the agenda. I did my first ever stand-up gig at the Whitstable Labour club in 1990 and then went back and did another one this year; so quite a gap between shows! I suppose the last 7 years, when I’ve been performing as an improviser, has really focused my attention on comedy on the stage.

You are presenting a live game show ‘You and Me’ at this year’s Faversham Fringe and sharing hosting duties with Amanda Croft. How did you come up with the idea for the show?

I wanted to combine my stand-up life, especially as an MC, with my improvised performances and a game show seemed like a fun way of doing this.

‘You and Me’ focuses on all types of relationships. How is your game show different to some of the ones that have been on TV over the years?

Our show is a celebration of all relationships, not just partners. It includes parent-child, siblings, friends, work colleagues. It’s been a fun challenge writing questions for each relationship.

How will the audience be a part of the performance?

Just a few members will need to take part, and only the willing ones. There’s always some people out there who wanna get up and do their bit. It must be a “stage” they’re going through.

Why should people come and see your show?

It will be a top night out, and we all need one of those.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival?

Therein lies the beauty of the Faversham Fringe; I am looking forward to being surprised by an outstanding performance. Every year I see new things, something I’ve not seen before. And something always blows my mind by being so great.

Watching ‘You and Me’ at this year’s Faversham Fringe

This certainly sounds like the kind of show that you can take your partner, friend or a family member to! It’s also lovely to hear that the audience interaction isn’t compulsory, which I am sure will be a relief to a lot of people. You can catch David Robert and Amanda Croft in action at the Faversham Fringe on Friday 17th October at 8:30pm, with tickets available via the festival’s website.
