4 reasons to watch Philharmonia Orchestra at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

Marlowe Theatre resident company Philharmonia Orchestra has various concerts coming up at the venue, as part of the theatre’s Autumn season. Last week I had the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, featuring Beethoven and Shostakovich’s compositions, which was an entirely new experience for me. I’ve always liked classical music, but never really known where to start with it. The concert was such a great introduction to the genre and off the back of this positive experience, I thought I’d share some reasons why you should watch the Philharmonia Orchestra in concert during their 2025/2026 season at the Marlowe.

1: It’s a chance to experience some world-class orchestral music in the heart of Kent.

The orchestra was formed in the 1940s and has performed across the globe. If you’re local to Canterbury, it’s an opportunity to witness their incredible skills on your doorstep, without the need to travel to London or further afield. This is very welcome, with the rising cost of train fares!

2: Their programme alternates between classical composers and more modern compositions.

The first performance of the season was Beethoven and Shostakovich, but later in 2025 there is the Philharmonia Brass Ensemble’s Christmas concert and in January the orchestra are presenting music from British movies. It is exciting that Philharmonia offers variety in their programme, with the Christmas and film music concerts appealing to people who wouldn’t typically go for classical music.

3: It will inspire the next generation of musicians.

There’s nothing quite like hearing incredible talents live to inspire you in your own musical journey. Watching all of the musicians, the lead cellist particularly, will inspire so many future musicians to keep going with their instruments!

4: It is an opportunity to see the venue transform into a concert hall.

Something for the die-hard theatre fans, but I found it fascinating seeing the Marlowe stage stripped back for a concert. The configuration of the orchestra and formation of chairs was so intriguing. It made you realise the sheer size of the venue’s stage, with how many people and instruments could fit within the space.
