New York-based comedian, actor and writer Meg Millane is returning to the Edinburgh Fringe this August with a new show Bride To Be: a solo comedy about wedding planning and the pressure surrounding saying “I do”. This will be the performer’s second time at the festival, following on from How to Give Up On Your Dreams in 2024. With weddings being such highly charged events, focusing on the planning process and associated commitment that comes with marriage certainly sounds like a relatable concept for a show and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to ask the performer some questions about her upcoming festival run at Greenside Venues.
How would you describe your comedy and performance style?
Very high energy, bubbly and charismatic! I love a misdirect joke and sprinkle a fair amount in the show. I also am such a happy approachable person that when I throw in a dark joke the audience is shocked into laughter and I LOVE it!!!
I always want my audience to feel super comfortable, like they are listening to their best friend tell them a story. I foster friendly and welcoming vibes – regardless if you knew me prior to the show you will walk out feeling like we are besties!
What inspired you to write a comedy about wedding planning?
I am at that age in life where it feels like almost every weekend I have a wedding to attend! Myself and 3 of my closest friends were all planning weddings around the same time. And we would be constantly texting each other things like “WHY DOES NO ONE RSVP ON TIME!?!” or “FLOWERS COST HOW MUCH?!!??” It was lovely having people to vent to about the process and it got me thinking about the weird bubble you enter when planning a wedding.
There are a lot of opinions when it comes to weddings. I wanted to take a nuanced approach and poke fun at the different view points, while telling the story of my own wedding and what went terribly wrong but ended up being a blessing in disguise.
To what extent is ‘Bride To Be’ based on your own experiences of weddings?
A LOT haha. The audience goes on a ride with me from engagement to the altar. I share some real life stories and the major disaster I encountered on my wedding day… no spoilers.
I use characters throughout that are amalgamations of real life events/people. The characters are heightened fantastical versions of typical wedding troupes and less rooted in my own personal experiences.
In the show, how are you balancing talking about the aesthetics of weddings with themes of commitment and marriage?
Balancing spectacle and substance is definitely a major plot point in the show. I think the over-the-top nature of the characters brings humor and lightness to some heavier topics and societal truths. Also I am very honest about my own internal struggle with wanting to wear sparkles but also wanting to take down the manosphere.
How did audiences react to the show at New York Fringe earlier this year?
They ate it up like the delicious 3 tier wedding cake it is!!! I was very pleased with how well the show was received at NYC Fringe and so thankful to receive positive praise from the press. I loved hearing that everyone I spoke to in the audience had a different favorite character. And I was so pleased when people were genuinely touched by the story and found it relatable.
If you were to look ahead to the end of August, what would you like to have achieved by the end of your second Edinburgh Fringe?
I want to have fun! It is so easy to get wrapped up in the pressure and competition of the Fringe. I sincerely just want to connect with the audience and make them laugh for an hour. I want to keep a positive attitude and keep my mental health in check so that I can perform my best. Meg’s positive energy for the show is just infectious and it is wonderful to hear that the performer is focused on just enjoying the experience.
