Think you know the Princesses in your favourite fairytales? Think again! The first UK professional production of Disenchanted! is heading to the Edinburgh Fringe this Summer, produced by The Production Garden. The musical written by Dennis T. Giacino and Fiely Matias is now in its 20th year and following a preview at Lichfield Garrick, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and more are about to be let loose on the Scottish capital! The musical reimagines these characters as we know them, giving them more confidence, independence and throwing in a touch of sass and mischief. I recently had the opportunity to ask cast member Rosie Napper some questions about the show and find out how it is going, preparing to play one of the world’s most well known fairytale Princesses.
How does it feel to be a part of the first UK professional production of Disenchanted!? Which character are you in the show and how are you finding taking on a well-known fairytale character?
It feels incredibly special not only to be part of the UK premiere but to be playing one of my all time favourite Princesses, Cinderella. It’s been a lot of fun developing her in a way you’ve never seen her before and it’s a huge honour to be able to bring it to life with our amazing team! The show has so many funny moments and so much heart, so having the permission to be creative throughout the rehearsal process, we were able to put so much of ourselves into our roles is a really unique opportunity. We’ve all had a blast so far!
How are you as a cast preparing for the Edinburgh run?
We had our rehearsals and a short run back in April at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre which gave us a decent amount of time to sink our teeth in the material and get a sense of how the audience would receive the show. Since then we are all keeping our material ticking over in our own time, staying fresh and honestly, desperate to all be reunited for rehearsals again before heading to Edinburgh!
Who will this cheeky and mischievous fairytale-themed musical appeal to?
Despite it featuring the Princesses, this is not a kids show! It’s the Princesses reclaiming their identities and telling the real stories with a lot of cheekiness thrown in. This show will definitely appeal to Disney Adults, Musical Theatre buffs and anyone with a good sense of humour and looking forward to having a good time! It’s such a feel-good show!
If you were to describe the musical in one word, what would it be and why?
I’m torn between ballsy, unhinged and cheeky – as it’s all three!
What are you most looking forward to, performing at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe?
I would say we are most looking forward to connecting with the audience on a deeper level. The beauty of the Fringe is that it’s more intimate by nature so I’m really looking forward to meeting people and sharing our favourite moments of not just Disenchanted! and the characters we’re portraying but also other shows and performances throughout the festival. The atmosphere is buzzing up there so we feel very grateful to be a part of it all! Almost everyone will have a favourite Princess and story so I personally can’t wait to hear how people react to our version of these characters.
Catch Disenchanted! at the 2026 festival
It sounds like Rosie and the company are about to have a really fun Summer in Edinburgh, bringing the Princesses to life on stage. It is exciting that this musical is finally getting its first UK professional production. Disenchanted! is based at Pentland Theatre at Pleasance at EICC (venue 150b) from 5th – 30th August (not 12th, 19th and 24th). Performances start at 19:00 (1 hour 20 minutes) with the exception of an 8:30pm show on 27th August and the musical is on sale via the EdFringe website now.
