Family-friendly musical The Big Bad Wolf which has been created by actor-musician touring theatre company, The Plandits, was another last minute addition to my Edinburgh Fringe schedule and this imaginative rock ‘n’ roll musical had me grinning from ear to ear. Fairytales are the subject matter for quite a few shows at the Fringe and sometimes it can be a little overdone as a concept, but The Plandits totally changed my mind on this thanks to their laugh-out-loud funny, creative 50-minute musical that puts the notorious storybook villain at the centre.
About the show
The music-loving Big Bad Wolf has been banished to the Deep Dark Wood following his behaviour towards the residents of Fairytaleville. The character is an outcast to society, banned from events due to his previous desire to eat some of the townsfolk. With a rhyming Fairy Godmother looking out for him, can the hungry carnivore finally turn his life around and be accepted by the community? Audiences get to follow the villain, his friends, Little Red Riding Hood and the various residents of the town in a multi-role musical extravaganza, complete with everyone’s favourite fairytale friends.
Inventive rock ‘n’ roll score
There is something so electric about actor-musician musicals, and this one is no less entertaining. The show features rock, punk, country and techno songs, providing so much musical variety within the 50-minute running time. Every number is played live at theSpace on the Mile and you honestly feel like you are at a fairytale-themed rock concert at times. Standout numbers are a hilarious techno track by The Three Little Pigs and the final number about being one of the pack.
It’ll make audiences howl with laughter!
The Big Bad Wolf is such a ridiculously enjoyable and madcap show, with some truly brilliant original songs. It is the kind of production that parents can take their children to, but will end up leaving the venue having enjoyed it just as much. The Plandits certainly know how to create a memorable family-friendly musical. You can catch the show at Space 3 at theSpace on the Mile (venue 39) until 22nd August (not 16th). Performances start daily at 11:30, with tickets available via the festival’s website.
