What I ate in Bratislava, Slovakia

If you’re a fussy eater like myself, it can be difficult to find food that you’re prepared to eat in restaurants abroad. When we were in Slovakia, the majority of local restaurants sold traditional classics such as goulash, schnitzel and dumplings. I don’t eat a lot of meat, so at dinner time, I ordered the alternative, less “meaty” dishes on the menu.

Side dishes at Pulitzer

Mixed vegetables, spiced potato wedges and bread at Pulitzer: a lovely restaurant on the edge of Bratislava's Old Town

I had mixed vegetables, spiced potato wedges and bread at Pulitzer: a lovely restaurant on the edge of the Old Town. This was my favourite meal of the trip, because it gave me a chance to try a few different types of Slovakian side dishes. My reaction to the vegetables was “broccoli has never tasted this good” and I’ve probably never been so excited about carrots and cauliflower before.

Pasta in the Old Town

Spaghetti Bolognese in Bratislava's Old Town

Spaghetti Bolognese was on most of the local restaurant menus, so I had that for dinner on one of the evenings. It was delicious and the perfect meal for me, when Stuart tried the local schnitzel. Mince is one of the types of meat that I don’t struggle with, so it was really handy that there was Spaghetti Bolognese available to order.

Burgers for lunch in the Old Town

Burgers for lunch at Biss Burger, Bratislava
Biss Burger is a very popular burger joint in central Bratislava. We had lunch there before we flew home and it was such a great affordable restaurant. Stuart had a bacon burger and I had a veggie burger whilst we were at Biss and with a drink included, the meal only cost us 16 euros. We’d highly recommend Biss Burger as the burgers are both delicious and good value.

Croissant sandwiches near Bratislava Castle

Croissant sandwiches at Moods Bakery and Coffee, Bratislava

After visiting Bratislava Castle, we had lunch at Moods Bakery and Coffee. Instead of regular sandwiches, the café sold croissants with fillings and they were very tasty. Moods Bakery has a great view of the UFO bridge and also free wi-fi, so it’s a fabulous place to stop for lunch if you fancy some relaxation time.

Chocolate Orange cake

Chocolate Orange cake at Pasteleria, Bratislava

Last but not least is dessert! We visited Pasteleria in the Old Town for cake on our final day and the Chocolate Orange cake was wonderful. Pasteleria was such a lovely little tea shop, that was hidden away in a city centre courtyard. We visited there twice during our weekend away and it’s somewhere that you should definitely visit for afternoon tea, if you’re heading to Bratislava anytime soon.

We ate some really yummy food in Bratislava. I also didn’t struggle as much as I thought I would, when it came to eating at traditional restaurants with my fussy eating habits. I always take photos of our food when we travel, so it’s nice to look back on our foodie experiences and write a trip food diary post when I get home.
Are you heading to Slovakia soon?
Are you looking forward to trying the local cuisine?
Thanks for reading my blog today.
