Things I’m looking forward to about Cry-Baby, The Musical at the Arcola Theatre

Fans of John Waters’ 1990s film ‘Cry-Baby’ will be thrilled to learn that they can catch the musical adaptation in London until 12th April, with the show running at the Arcola Theatre in East London for 5 weeks. Set in 1950s Baltimore and focusing on the blossoming romance between young lovers Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker and Allison Vernon-Williams, the musical looks at the impact of two contrasting subcultures on city life and what happens when teenagers from the opposing groups start a relationship. This Spring, Mark O’Donnell, Thomas Meehan, Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum’s musical is having its UK premiere, following a 2008 Broadway run, and it is safe to say that this new opening in London is very exciting. So much so that I was inspired to write about everything I’m looking forward to with this production, from the memorable characters to the costume design.

Listening to the score for the first time.

The stage adaptation has completely different music to the film, with new songs penned by Adam Schlesinger (music) and David Javerbaum (lyrics). Described as a rockabilly score, I have completely resisted listening to the Broadway cast recording prior to my visit, so that I can listen to the tracks in a theatre for the first time. The musical numbers are sure to be filled with lots of hilarious teenage angst.

The dance numbers.

The film has some incredible dance sequences and I’m hoping that we will get to see the same infectious, high energy on stage. The ‘Drapes’ (Greasers) and ‘Squares’ behave completely differently and this is an opportunity for some really contrasting dance styles and performances.

The subculture-inspired costumes.

Anyone who has seen the film will know that the two groups have very distinct clothing styles and hairdos. It will be interesting to see how designer Robert Innes Hopkins has envisioned these lively characters. If the film is anything to go by, there are many bold personalities to bring to life on stage.

Seeing the official show merchandise which has been designed by Letters to July.

My talented friend Nishat has collaborated with the Arcola Theatre on creating the official merchandise for the show. Through her online brand ‘Letters to July’, Nishat has designed a pin and pack of stickers. After the collaboration was announced this week, I can’t wait to see the items. If they are still available when I see the show, I’ll definitely be adding the pin to my collection.

Booking tickets to see Cry-Baby in London

I am thrilled to see the musical get its UK premiere. With a cast made up of 17 performers, including Adam Davidson as Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker and Lulu-Mae Pears as Allison Vernon-Williams, this is the largest ensemble in the venue’s 25 year history. It will also be my first time visiting the venue, which is exciting. Previews started on Thursday 6th March and performances run until Saturday 12th April. Tickets can be purchased via the venue’s website.

Thanks for reading my blog today.

Love Kat xxxx
