My most highly anticipated act of the 2024 Canterbury Festival has been ’Flat and the Curves’: the female musical comedy group who recently headed to the Edinburgh Fringe with their show ‘Rosé-Tinted’. Combining comedy and incredible vocals, the girl band are known for their brilliant feminist humour, impeccable timing and unfiltered way of summarising the modern female experience, from online dating to the perils of making plans. Featuring Katy Baker, Issy Wroe Wright and Charlotte Brooke for the Canterbury performance, the group performed at the Westgate Hall on Friday 25th October for one night only, providing a hilarious evening of innuendo-filled entertainment.
Incomparable writing
From songs about removing your bra after a long day to the stress of hen parties, there is only one word to describe Charlotte Brooke’s songwriting: relatable. The group share everything most women feel too embarrassed to admit to anyone outside of their closest friends, taking the audience on a wild ride through the realities of modern day womanhood. However, it is not only the lyrics that are incredibly amusing, the melodies are fun too and collectively they span a variety of genres.
The ultimate comedy girl band
All I kept thinking throughout the performance was how much I wanted to be friends with the group. They have this incomparable chemistry and ultimate comfort on stage, encouraging each other to be more daring and mischievous with the material. Every song was cleverly written and well executed, radiating the individual personalities and underlying themes of supportive friendships. The structure is intentionally chaotic, with everything going totally off the rails by the end, but this makes for such a lively viewing experience.
A must-see cabaret act
‘Flat and the Curves’ are in a league of their own with their musical performance style. They have this natural ability to draw in an audience from the moment they set foot on the stage and they maintain this throughout thanks to their brilliant original songs, clever transitions and infectious, relatable comedy.
