Most of the time when I talk about theatre, readers can expect detailed show reviews from performances across Kent, London and beyond. Today I wanted to share something a little different and talk about some upcoming theatre news which is sure to entice fans of the theatrical creative process, all in aid of a fantastic project and cause.
Out of the Margins Auction
Starting on 15th September, an exciting theatre auction is going to be taking place through auction service The Auction Collective, in collaboration with Christie’s auction house in London. The auction will feature first and special edition annotated play texts from world-renowned script writers and playwrights, including the likes of Tom Stoppard (Leopoldstrat), Richard Curtis (Love Actually) and Tina Fey (Mean Girls) to name but a few. There will be 50 texts up for sale covering productions such as Wicked, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and SIX the Musical and theatre fans can bid on these pieces of memorabilia from the 15th September until 2pm on 6th October 2023.
Despite this being of considerable interest due to its theatrical theme, what stands out most for me is the fact that proceeds from the auction will go to Good Chance Theatre: a company that provides pop-up performance spaces and arts training for refugees, working to bring communities together through theatre.
About Good Chance Theatre
The organisation was founded in 2015 in the Calais migrant camps and creators Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson have worked on several arts projects and shows since the launch. I remember hearing about their work ‘The Walk’ when Little Amal came to Canterbury in 2021. The project had the whole community behind it, and I am really happy to be spreading the word about this fantastic opportunity for theatre lovers.
Associated free exhibition at Christie’s
If the auction has sparked your interest, there will be a free exhibition featuring some of the play texts at Christie’s in St James from 20th-28th September. I am very much looking forward to seeing the annotated work in person and supporting the theatre company. I hope fellow theatre fans get a chance to experience the free exhibition too!
